# Build with AI agents

> Use Moderation API from AI coding agents and assistants: a setup skill, an MCP server, a CLI and docs that agents can read.

Moderation API has three tools for AI agents. Each one does a different job.

| Tool | Use it to | Install |
| - | - | - |
| [Setup skill](https://docs.moderationapi.com/ai/skill.md) | Add moderation to the code of your app | `npx skills add moderation-api/skills` |
| [MCP server](https://docs.moderationapi.com/ai/mcp.md) | Run your account from an agent: review queues, authors, policies, analytics | `https://mcp.moderationapi.com/mcp` |
| [CLI](https://docs.moderationapi.com/quickstart/cli.md) | Sign in, create a project, write the keys, check your setup | `brew install moderation-api/tap/modapi` |

## Start here

**Any agent**

Copy this prompt into your coding agent. Nothing to install first:

```text theme={"theme":"nord"}
Read https://moderationapi.com/SKILL.md and set up Moderation API in this app.
```

The agent reads the setup skill from our site and follows it. To keep the skill in your agent for later, install it instead: `npx skills add https://moderationapi.com`.

**Claude Code**

The plugin installs the setup skill and connects the MCP server in one step:

```bash theme={"theme":"nord"}
/plugin marketplace add moderation-api/skills
/plugin install moderation-api@moderation-api
```

Then ask: "Set up Moderation API in this app."

**Other coding agents**

Install the setup skill. It works with Cursor, Codex, Windsurf and other agents that read skills:

```bash theme={"theme":"nord"}
npx skills add moderation-api/skills
```

Then ask your agent: "Set up Moderation API in this app." To run your account from the agent too, [connect the MCP server](https://docs.moderationapi.com/ai/mcp.md).

**Chat assistants**

In Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants that support MCP, add the MCP server as a connector with the URL `https://mcp.moderationapi.com/mcp`. See [MCP server](https://docs.moderationapi.com/ai/mcp.md).

## What the agent does

When you ask an agent with the setup skill to add moderation, it:

1. Checks your setup with `modapi doctor`.
2. Finds every place where users create content, and writes a plan for you to approve.
3. Creates or links your project with `modapi init`. The CLI writes your keys to your env file. The agent never sees them.
4. Adds the moderation call on your server, and handles `allow`, `review` and `reject`.
5. Sets up [webhooks](https://docs.moderationapi.com/actions/webhooks.md) for decisions that moderators make later.
6. Checks the result against a list of common mistakes, and sends a test.

You approve each change. You can start in [shadow mode](https://docs.moderationapi.com/ai/skill.md#shadow-mode), to see the results before they affect your users.

## Docs for agents

These docs are written for people and for agents:

* [`llms.txt`](https://docs.moderationapi.com/llms.txt) lists every page. [`llms-full.txt`](https://docs.moderationapi.com/llms-full.txt) has all pages in one file.
* Add `.md` to the URL of any page to get it as Markdown, for example `https://docs.moderationapi.com/ai/mcp.md`.
* `modapi <command> --schema` prints the exact request body of an API call.

## When something is missing

If your agent finds that Moderation API cannot do what you ask, it can draft a feature request for you. It shows you the draft first, and sends it only when you agree. You can also send one with [`POST /feedback`](https://docs.moderationapi.com/api-reference/feedback/send-feedback). We read every request.
